What waits behind the museum doors

This is the one stop in Hiroshima where the story is told in sequence, with objects, photographs and survivors' testimony instead of monuments standing in the open air. The permanent exhibition is arranged in six areas: an introductory exhibit, Hiroshima on August 6, Victims and Survivors, a gallery on the building of the park, the dangers of nuclear weapons, and Hiroshima history.6 Go in expecting it to be heavy, and do not book a cheerful, hurried lunch for the minutes right after.

Two buildings share the work. The first floor of the East Building holds the practical side and is free to enter: information, the museum shop, the ticket counter, audio guide rental, a video theater and the visitor's lounge.7 The permanent exhibition begins upstairs, where the third floor of the East Building carries Hiroshima before the bombing, A Lost Way of Life, the dangers of nuclear weapons and a corner of survivor video testimony.8 The remaining areas of the index follow the same thread of story.

How much time to give it is your call. The Viator bus day lists the museum as a 60-minute stop between the park and the ferry crossing. The audio guide alone runs about 70 minutes if you listen to everything, though you can skip or repeat explanations as you like.9 Put the two side by side and you can decide whether to follow the whole audio route or choose the rooms that matter most to you.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum hours across the year

The calendar sets the day. From March to July the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum hours run from 7:30am to 7:00pm, and September to November uses the same window.1,2 August stretches to 8:00pm, and to 9:00pm on August 5 and 6.13 From December to February the museum closes earlier, at 6:00pm.2 If your plan is built around a late-afternoon arrival, check which season you are in before you count on the evening.

The first and last hours of the day work differently from the middle. To enter the permanent exhibition during the extended hours, which cover 7:30am to 8:30am and a one-hour slot in the evening, you need an online reservation made beforehand.10 That evening slot is 5:30pm to 6:30pm from March to July and September to November, 6:30pm to 7:30pm in August, and 4:30pm to 5:30pm from December to February.14 Outside those windows you simply buy a ticket at the counter.

Closing days are short but easy to forget. The museum is closed on December 30 and 31 and in mid-February, and the library next door has its own break from December 29 through January 1.4 Plan the museum for another day if you land in those dates. Tour listings account for closures as well: one coach-day listing says that if its group cannot get in because of admission limits or other reasons, it may visit an alternative place instead.

  • High school ticket100 yen

The ticket rates, the audio guide rental and the locker coin (returned afterwards) are the museum's own published figures.3,15,16,11

Tickets in yen, and who pays less

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum tickets are sold at the counter in yen. Adults (college students and up) pay 200 yen, high school students pay 100 yen, and junior high school students and younger enter free.3 Groups of 30 or more adults pay 160 yen each.3 Visitors aged 65 and over pay 100 yen if they show their passport.15 The prices are the museum's own, posted on its page, and they are separate from whatever a tour listing charges.

The ticket counter and the audio guide rental sit on the same floor, the first floor of the East Building.7 Renting an audio guide costs 500 yen per unit, or 450 yen each when a group rents 30 or more.16 The guide comes in 15 languages, among them Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian and Ukrainian.21 Group reservations for the audio guide are taken by phone only, and the call is handled in Japanese only.22

It helps to separate the two money questions. The Viator coach day is from $126 for the whole eight hours. Its inclusions list admission to the Peace Memorial Museum, so the 200 yen entry is covered on that day; keep some yen for the audio guide and a locker coin if you want them.3,16,11

Bags, lockers, cameras and the manners of the rooms

Large bags are not allowed into the museum; coin lockers wait on the first floor of the East Building.5 There are 96 of them, each taking a 100 yen coin that is returned afterwards.11 If you step off the Shinkansen and come straight here with a suitcase, this is the place to leave it before the exhibits begin.

Photography without flash is allowed for personal purposes, but tripods and selfie sticks are not.23 The museum also asks visitors to keep quiet so that others are not disturbed,24 and not to talk on a cell phone in the exhibition rooms.25 Eating and drinking are allowed only in designated areas, such as the visitor's lounge on the first floor of the East Building.26 Keep your camera for the walls that allow it, and put it away when the room goes still.

The lounge, called Aogiri, offers light meals, drinks and boxed lunches, which gives you a place to pause between floors.12 Free Wi-Fi is available in the museum except in the basement of the East Building.27 One more line for drivers: there is no public parking in the Peace Memorial Park, so the museum points you to nearby paid lots.28

Reaching the museum from the station

The museum's own access page gives clear options from Hiroshima Station. The No. 24 Hiroshima Bus leaves from the south exit and takes about 20 minutes to the Heiwa kinen koen stop.29 A streetcar toward Fukuro-machi or Genbaku Domu Mae takes about 25 minutes.30 The sightseeing loop bus takes about 17 minutes.31

If you arrive at the bus center instead, the page puts the museum at about a 10-minute walk.32 The streetcar page names two stops, Fukuro-machi and Genbaku Domu Mae, depending on the line you ride, so check the line number on the front of the car before you board.

On the Viator bus day, none of this needs planning: the group meets at the Shinkansen ticket gate on the second floor of Hiroshima Station and the museum is one of the stops on the route. Traveling independently, build the walk so the museum is neither squeezed at the very end of a tired day nor left for a closing hour you have not reserved.

Audio guide, volunteers or a paid guide

Three ways exist to make sense of the rooms. The audio guide is the quiet one: about 70 minutes in all, with explanations you can skip or repeat.9 In the museum's own words, it explains the exhibits from the perspective of victims, survivors and their families.20

Hiroshima Peace Volunteers give English tours, but not everywhere. Their tours inside the museum are not available,19 while tours of the Peace Memorial Park run at fixed times with up to 10 people, starting at 10:45 and 14:00.33 Advance reservations are not accepted,18 the park tours cost nothing,17 and they are not offered from July to September, on heat stroke alert days, January 1-3, August 6 or December 29.34

Paid guiding fills the gaps. A two-hour small-group walk, limited to 10 people and listing the museum among its stops, starts from $23. The Viator coach day covers the museum within a full eight hours and starts from $126. Pick by how much talking you want next to the exhibits, not by price alone.

Fitting the museum into a day without rushing it

A heavy visit needs space around it. Start the museum with fresh energy, leave the bag in a locker and agree with your group whether to move together or at your own speed. If you are unsure how long you will want, take the audio guide and let the skip button do the editing.

On a Hiroshima and Miyajima day, the order matters more than the minutes. The listed route of the Viator bus day puts the dome, the park and the museum before the ferry to Miyajima. That order carries the day from remembrance to the shrine island. Plan any independent day the same way: the museum in the morning, a quiet lunch, and the lighter island afterward.

If you cannot give the museum the time it deserves, there is a middle path. Walk the park outdoors on a guided tour, then come back for a focused visit at the museum's evening slot with a reservation made online beforehand.10 Whichever way you go, leave the camera down in the rooms, speak softly, and let the place do its work.
