Hiroshima in brief
The Miyajima Ropeway is built from two different systems running in series: a circulating gondola line and a funicular type, which the operator says is unique in Japan.6 The Momijidani Line has 8-seater gondolas at about 1-minute intervals and takes approximately 10 minutes. The Shishiiwa Line runs at intervals of 5 to 15 minutes and takes approximately 4 minutes.7 You change at Kayatani Station without leaving the system.
The base is Momijidani Station, in Momijidani Park. A free shuttle bus runs to Momijidani Station about every 20 minutes from 9.50 am.8 The operator's guide lists a round trip from Momijidani Station to Shishiiwa Station as about one hour there and back, and a trip to the very top of Mt. Misen as about one hour more.9 That second hour covers the walk from the top station to the summit.
Know the limits of the cars. This facility has no elevators, and strollers, wheelchairs and other vehicles cannot board the circular ropeway; they are left at the Momijidani Station Office.10 Pets are not allowed on the ropeway, though service dogs may ride with the person they assist.11 If anyone in your party uses a wheelchair or pushes a stroller, plan the day around those rules before you leave the pier.

Times from JNTO, the Miyajima Tourist Association and the operator; actual times depend on the walker.5,21,22,9,3
Ordinary fares: an adult pays 2,000 yen for the round trip and 1,100 yen one way; a child pays 1,000 yen round trip and 550 yen one way.1 An adult here is anyone aged 12 and over, and a child is 6 to 12.14 Children not yet in elementary school ride free with an adult, one child per adult.15 Parties of 15 and over, and visitors aged 65 or above with proof of age, pay 1,800 yen for an adult round trip and 900 yen for a child.16,17
A bundle exists if you start at Miyajimaguchi. Miyajima Matsudai Kisen sells a ferry and ropeway round-trip ticket at 2,100 yen for an adult and 1,100 yen for a child, and the ticket includes the 100 yen Miyajima visitor tax; it says you save 400 yen per adult by buying the two together.4 It is sold at the Miyajimaguchi counter from 8:30 to 15:00 and is valid for two days including the day of purchase.18 It is not sold on Miyajima Island.18
The bundle comes with a weather guarantee of sorts. When the ropeway is suspended because of strong winds or storms, ticket holders can claim a refund, and the refund is 1,660 yen for an adult and 830 yen for a child.19,20 At Momijidani Station you can pay by credit card, transit IC card or PayPay, but cashless payment is not accepted at Shishiiwa Station, so carry yen if you plan to buy anything at the top.12
What a ride costs
The ropeway's published hours are 9:00 until 16:00, with a final return departure at 16:30.13 The home page gives the two directions separately: up from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm and down from 9.20 am to 4.30 pm.2 The last upward ride is therefore your real deadline. Count backward from the 16:30 final return and leave time to walk from the summit to the top station, which takes about 30 minutes.3,13
Service stops when the weather turns. The operator lists bad weather such as strong winds and thunderstorms as grounds for suspension, along with periodic maintenance twice a year, around February and July.25 The home page repeats the warning: it may suspend its services because of high winds, thunder, power outage or other circumstances.23 A day with a wind forecast is a day to have a backup, such as the hiking route down from the summit.
On specific peak days you must reserve a ride in advance online. The operator designates these days, especially during peak seasons, and lists the coming months of them on its service information page.26 Check that page before you travel, especially in peak seasons. If your date is on the list, book first; the hour of the ferry crossing can wait. The Matsudai combo ticket has its own limits: it is not for sale during periodic inspection and maintenance, nor from December 31 to January 1.27

Three official courses
Three courses reach the summit, the Momijidani Course, the Daisho-in Course and the Omoto Course, and all take approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours from town.5 The two-hour Daisho-in Course starts by Daishoin Temple, passes shrines and temples in high forest, and ends with a 360-degree view of the Seto Inland Sea from the observatory at the top.21 The Daisho-in Temple itself is a 30-minute walk from the pier.28
The Daishoin route climbs 24 cho, about 2.6 km, to the peak, and one cho is 109 m.22 Guide stones count the cho as you go, so you always know how much of the climb is left. Mount Misen is 535 m high; Komagabayashi is 506 m and Mount Iwafunedake 466.6 m.29 The Miyajima Tourist Association reminds hikers that on Miyajima you start from 0 m above sea level and asks them not to underestimate the mountains.30
One compromise is to climb one way and ride the other. After the summit, visitors can take a 1-kilometer walk to the Mt. Misen Ropeway stop.31 The ropeway stop at the top is Shishiiwa Station, about 30 minutes on foot from the summit, and the cars run down from there until 4.30 pm.3,2 The routes are well maintained, but the trails on Mt. Misen have steep inclines and rocky terrain, and the knees notice the way down.24 Allow more time than the book times if you go slowly, and start early.

Mount Misen on Miyajima stands 535 meters high in the background of Itsukushima Shrine and has been revered as a sacred mountain since ancient times.32 Kukai, posthumously called Kobo Daishi, opened it as an ascetic holy mountain site, and Misen Hondo was built by Kobo Daishi in 806.33,34 JNTO describes Mt. Misen as the highest peak on Miyajima, surrounded by the floating torii, Itsukushima Shrine and the island's deer.35
Several sights lie around the summit. The sacred fire in the Reikado hall has been burning for over 1,200 years, and it was used to light the Flame of Peace in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.36 Sanki Daigongen are three fierce guardian gods of Mt. Misen.37 The Great Mandara Rock carries Buddhist scriptures written by Kobo-Daishi.38 The association lists the Reikado fire and the monument at Shishiiwa Station as the island's two Lovers' Sanctuary spots.39
The view repays the climb. From Shishiiwa Station it is only about 30 minutes on foot to the summit.3 On the Daisho-in Course the top ends with a 360-degree view of the Seto Inland Sea.21 The 431.2 hectares of Mount Misen primeval forest on the back of the shrine were registered as World Heritage in December 1996.40 Take a quiet minute at the top before you start the walk down; the descent asks for attention.

while the three official trails are well-maintained, the trails on Mt. Misen have steep inclines and rocky terrain.
The Miyajima Tourist Association is blunt about the mountain: it is simple for trekking, but it turns dangerous because of its steepness if you lose your way, and since the mountains are steep there are searches every year for missing mountaineers.41,42 It asks hikers to climb in clothes and shoes suitable for hiking, to take precautions against the cold in winter and autumn, and to carry a compass and a Geographical Survey Institute map in case they get lost.43,44,45
Know the start point. Several accidents have occurred recently because hikers made a mistake in the start of the Daishoin route, which begins on the left before the bridge in front of the Niomon Gate of Daishoin Temple.46,47 Watch for poisonous insects, such as hornets, and venomous snakes, such as vipers.48 Everyone is asked to take garbage home.49 If the weather turns, the ropeway may be suspended, so a hiker needs a way down that does not depend on it.
Pack for a mountain, not a shrine. Carry water, a rain layer and cash for Shishiiwa Station, which does not take cards.12 Check the ropeway's own home page the morning you go, since service can be suspended for high winds or thunder.23 If you travel with a small child, remember that the ropeway fare is free for preschool children with an adult and that strollers cannot board the circular line.15,10 Last, set a turnaround time so the last ropeway at 16:30 is a fallback and not a plan.13
